In Hong Kong the heaviest rains in 140 years

Over 600 millimeters of rain fell during the day, which is about a quarter of the city’s normal annual rainfall.

In many places, the streets of Hong Kong are rippling with water, and the roofs of cars are being split by the floodwaters. Water has also flowed into subway stations.

There are very serious disturbances in the traffic in the special administrative area. The authorities have declared extreme conditions to continue until midnight local time.

According to the rescue service, two people have died and more than a hundred have been injured in the floods. In addition, hundreds of people have been evacuated. Hong Kong’s stock market and schools are closed.

In Hong Kong, it has rained the heaviest in the history of measurement, i.e. since 1884. The Hong Kong weather station registered more than 158 millimeters of rain in one hour the night before Friday.

Officials warn of flash floods and landslides and urge those living near rivers to leave their homes immediately if the water starts to rise.
