In his book Matthew Perry explains what he really wants

Most people probably knew Matthew Perry as Chandler from Friends. The sitcom ran from 1994 to 2004 and turned into a pop culture phenomenon. Perry played the character in it Chandler Bingwhich has found a very large fan base through its humor – sometimes sarcastic, sometimes heartwarming.

In his memoir, published in November 2022, Perry wrote that he wishes people remembered him for something different. Perry, who struggled with alcohol and drug addiction for years, later campaigned heavily to to help other people with addiction problems.

Perry had spent a lot of time in recent years reflecting on his addiction. Parts of it are in the play he wrote The End of Longing from 2016. He also created the Perry House, a facility for people who want to get sober again.

In his memoirs he wrote:

When I die, I know people will be talking about Friends, Friends and Friends. And I’m happy about that. I’m glad that I did a solid job as an actor and gave people the opportunity to make fun of me on the Internet several times. But when I die [und die Menschen über] my so-called successes [reden]it would be nice if Friends very far behind things that I have done to help other people.
