Helldivers 2 has recently thrown its players into a dilemma. They are currently puzzling over how best to solve it – and what the consequences might be.
What’s going on in Helldivers 2? According to general orders, the Helldivers are to concentrate their efforts on two planets: Vernen Wells and Marfark.
The nasty thing: The Helldivers find themselves in a Batman-The-Dark-Knight situation in which only one of the two goals can be achieved. The Joker gave Batman a choice: either he saves his great love, Rachel, or he finds Harvey Dent, the moral advocate that Gotham so desperately needs.
It looks similar in the game right now: only the first planet to be liberated determines which of the two options will ultimately come into effect.
Meanwhile, the Helldivers community is starting to decide which direction they want to go in. But some aren’t sure what the consequences will be.
Most Helldivers want to save the children and hope for the best
At this point, it is becoming clear that the Helldivers are making the moral choice and setting out to save the sick children.
Some still joke that it’s really about time to get the mines – because they have been an option for such orders for the third time now, and the first two times the choice fell on the other option – but overall everyone agrees that it is much more important to save the children.
Curiosity is obviously also playing a role here: many are excited to see how the rescue will develop in the coming weeks. Because with the mines it is relatively clear: if you get them, you will have the mines as an additional resource.
At the same time, some people are worried about the consequences the decision might have. The past has already shown that Helldivers’ orders sometimes have unexpected consequences that are much worse than expected.
Given the sometimes very morbid humor, some fear that the children may face a worse fate if they are saved. This is what they share on the Helldivers subreddit:
It remains to be seen whether there are any children on the planet to be saved in the end. The large-scale mission, which ultimately created a black hole or portal in the galaxy, showed that not every order given to the Helldivers is as honest as one might assume.
But that remains to be seen. In any case, it is a credit to the community that the majority of them have apparently decided to help children in need instead of taking the “oh, cool new weapon” route. How it all turns out will soon become clear, as the current order expires in a few days.
The original film for Helldivers, Starship Troopers, also dealt satirically with a military society that takes on the fight against intergalactic beetles. But the cult film’s morbid humor did not translate to the entire audience. The star of the film recently spoke out and talked about the topic – more on that here.
