Germany’s contentious governing coalition collapsed earlier this week.
In Germany, the Greens’ Minister of Economy and Climate Robert Habeck has told about his desire to become the country’s chancellor, German newspapers say Spiegel and Bild.
Habeck, who also serves as vice chancellor, told about his desire to lead the country on Friday in an interview with the German Broadcasting Corporation’s television channel ARD.
However, according to Spiegel, he did not explicitly use the word chancellor candidate.
– I am ready to offer my experience, strength and responsibility. If you want, even as chancellor, Habeck said.
– But it’s not my decision, it’s your decision. Only you can decide, he addressed the audience.
When Habeck was asked whether he should be called a chancellor candidate or not, he told ARD that “you can choose”.
They work together as chairmen of the German Green Party Ricarda Lang and Omid Nouripour.
Germany’s contentious governing coalition collapsed earlier this week when the liberal FDP announced the resignation of its ministers. Minister of Transport Volker Wissing instead said he plans to remain a minister and resign from the FDP instead.
About two-thirds of Germans want new elections in the country as soon as possible, and only one-third support the initial timetable proposal of the Democratic Chancellor Olaf Scholz, according to which early elections could be held at the end of March.
