A year ago, Hamas attacked Israel. Since then, the war in Gaza has created very sharp divisions in Germany. Due to its history, the various German governments have made Israel’s existence a “reason of state” and they are among Tel Aviv’s most loyal allies. But this almost unconditional support from Berlin arouses criticism in the country, within the Palestinian community, but also within the Jewish community, despite the feeling of insecurity which followed October 7.
