In focus: Why China invests so heavily in Africa

This week, leaders from over 50 African countries traveled to Beijing for meetings with, among others, Xi Jinping. During the meeting, the Chinese leader announced that China will invest over SEK 500 billion in the continent over the next three years.

– China is ready to deepen cooperation with African countries in industry, agriculture, infrastructure, trade and investment, Xi said during the meeting.

However, the fact is that cooperation between China and African countries is already profound. In recent years, the country’s influence on the continent has grown as more and more money has been invested.

– What China has is a long-term, strategic and politically very clear focus on Africa, says SVT’s Asia correspondent Tilde Lewin.
