Lately, the issue of surrogacy arrangements has come into focus, among other things, after the SVT Dokument from the inside documentary “Vi ska ha barn”, where a 70-year-old couple become parents via surrogate.
– It is an opportunity for many people to have children, who otherwise would not have had it, says Michael Hellner, professor of international private and procedural law.
Banned in Sweden
Surrogate arrangements are not permitted in the Swedish healthcare system, and the issue divides the Swedish parliamentary parties. and therefore many go abroad to arrange the surrogate arrangement.
– There are lots of problems, for example a check is not made on the intended parents, says Michael Hellner.
