The reasons for a miscarriage are sometimes lacking. But researchers may have a clue: heat. Explanations.
Extreme heat is not the friend of pregnancy. Premature delivery, babies who lack weight, or even risks of mortality at birth are already associated with it. Boston University researchers have pointed to another potentially harmful effect of heat on pregnancy: early miscarriage. Explanations.
Scientists studied a cohort of patients in the United States and Canada, with 12,197 women, between 2013 and 2020. Among them, 6,104 became pregnant. The researchers were interested in pregnancies that had spontaneously ended in miscarriage and were interested in the times of the year when these events were recorded.
In other words, they tried to find out if certain seasons favored the wrong ones more than others. And the answer is yes: especially in August, mainly before the 8th week of pregnancy. Baby loss before week 14 was 44% higher at this time of year. Another point observed, the center west and the south of the United States concentrated a large number of them.
While these are only observations for the time being that deserve further investigation, they believe that there is a combination of factors (environmental, lifestyle, etc.) to explain this concentration in the month of august. And according to them, it could be that the high temperatures would contribute to increasing the risk of miscarriage.
Further analyzes will have to be carried out, but as a precaution, at the start of pregnancy, it is better to protect yourself from heat waves, by drinking regularly, cooling your body, avoiding going out during hot hours, limiting physical effort, maintaining his accommodation at the expense…
