In Diablo 4, the “ultimate” skills are the weakest – player explains why

Each class in Diablo 4 has so-called “ultimate skills” that provide various bonuses. One player explains why they are still among the weakest skills.

In Diablo 4, the five classes have different categories of skills. Some of these are specific categories that affect the respective class, such as “infusion skills” for hunters or “curse skills” for necromancers. Other skills can be found in each skill tree:

  • Basic skills
  • Core skills
  • key passive skills
  • ultimate skills
  • Which skills are being discussed? The category of “ultimates” is currently a hot topic in the Diablo 4 community on Reddit. These are ultimate skills that can complement the builds, but have a much longer cooldown. User “luckydog27” notes that the ultimates, whose goal is to cause damage, seem to be pretty bad at that.

For Season 4, the developers have revised a number of things in Diablo 4, including the item system. The skill trees have not changed. Here you can see a video about the new content:

Why are the ultimate skills weak? In his post on Reddit, “luckydog27” asks why ultimates are so bad at causing damage. In the comments, users discuss the topic. The top comment comes from “CrookedShepherd”.

    He writes:

Ultimates don’t have the benefit of a boost to skill ranks, and there are very few general aspects or effects that buff ultimates, unlike the many things that affect core and base skills. I definitely think they need to be reworked, as many builds ignore them completely or just choose them for their utility rather than the massive damage they were originally intended for.

In another comment, “CrookedShepherd” notes that he would like to see some kind of “scaling modifier,” such as a bonus to ultimate ranks or a boost to ultimate damage. It’s “crazy how few options there are to strengthen them compared to other skills.”

If you take a look at the tier list of the strongest endgame builds in Season 4 of Diablo 4, you will notice that some builds do use ultimates – but apparently mainly for various boosts and not for the damage itself. This is also noted by the users in the Reddit post.

Players want revision of the “Ultimates”

What do other players say? “TheWorstDMYouKnow” notes in the comment that many minion builds use the ultimate skill “Army of the Dead”. Several users respond to him that it is primarily used as a buff for the minions. “EnvironmentalCoach64” adds: “The Bone Storm [der Totenbeschwörer] is a solid defensive option.”

And “is_this-thing_on” writes: “The same applies to “Invocation of the Ancestors” [der Barbaren]. The [Ultimate] The damage it deals is ridiculous, but the damage buff is what makes it worth using.”

The user “eno_ttv” writes in the comment: “Ultimates mostly miss their target, which is a shame because they are by far some of the coolest skills. The cooldowns are way too long […].”

He hopes that the first expansion for Diablo 4, Vessel of Hatred, will see a revision of the skill trees. It is pointless “that the Spiritborn has the same problems with its skill tree and its ultimates as the other classes.” He also says that ultimates need their own skill slot. It feels better to have 6 skills + 1 ultimate than 5 skills and 1 ultimate with a cooldown.

Vessel of Hatred is the first expansion for Diablo 4. Blizzard has already introduced a number of features that will be introduced into the game – including new skills, legendary glyphs and paragon tablets for all classes. It remains to be seen how this will affect the ultimate skills. The expansion will be released in October and will also usher in Season 6.
