In Destiny 2 you will soon no longer need an accountant

Over the past year, Destiny 2 has worked to drastically reduce the total number of in-game currencies. Instead of 24 different currencies, which hardly anyone understood, there will probably only be five main currencies in the future. And that’s a real improvement, some say.

Why was an accountant needed in Destiny 2? Like every game, Destiny 2 has in-game currencies. When The Witch Queen DLC was released in 2022, no fewer than 24 currencies were available in the game. Too much. Especially for new players who couldn’t see through the abundance of currencies at all.

However, over the past year and a half, Bungie has been working to drastically reduce the total number of in-game currencies. Instead of a large number of different currencies that influence gameplay, there will only be five main currencies in the future.

5 instead of 24 currencies should simplify Destiny

Why is Bungie taking this step? The changes to Destiny 2’s economy are a direct response to player feedback that they wanted more clarity and less confusion about in-game currencies. Bungie listened and took the game’s usability to the next level.

Everything has been removed or changed:

  • Several types of resonance elements for weapon crafting have been deleted.
  • Deletion of all planetary materials such as Microphasic Datagrids, Baryon Tribes or Glacial Starweed.
  • Removal of synthetic strands for the transmog system.
  • Elimination of Finest Matter Web and Rainmaker, which were just other forms of Glimmer and Enhancement Cores.
  • Upgrade Modules have been simplified so that purchases no longer require multiple currencies, only Glimmer.
  • This was an important step, especially for the future of the game in 2025, because the old and much too complex economic system would be a deterrent for newcomers. Now players can look forward to no longer having to act like bookkeepers and need tons of different materials to progress through the game.

These five main currencies are left:

  • mica
  • Legendary Shards
  • Enhancement Cores
  • Improvement Prisms
  • and ascendant fragments and alloys
  • There are also a few extremely rare one-time currencies, such as exotic ciphers or seasonal keys. But nothing more.

Outside of gameplay, that leaves Silver and Bright Dust. However, despite Destiny’s increasingly annoying microtransactions being criticized by players, the Bright Dust economy is still strong and quite solid. It could be worse overall, says Destiny writer Paul Tassi, and he’s more worried about Diablo 4 than Destiny 2.

So, with the upcoming simplification of Destiny 2’s economy, Bungie is making sure that the game becomes more accessible for all players, regardless of their experience.

What do you think of these changes? Do you think simplifying the economic system will make Destiny 2 more attractive to new players? And how do you feel about the changes yourself? Is it easier like this? Please leave us your opinion in the comments.
