In Christopher Nolans Oppenheimer every second counts – for this

Master director Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer tells the true story behind the invention of the atomic bomb. Nolan has researched it down to the smallest historical detail. For the most perfect recreation of time, he therefore worked together with the traditional manufacturer Hamilton. Hamilton has been providing Hollywood productions with authentic timepieces for over 90 years.

Why time is essential for Oppenheimer

J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy) is a theoretical physicist and, like his biologist wife Kitty (Emily Blunt), a scientist through and through. When World War II broke out, a race against time began: which world power would be the first to create the atomic bomb? In the US, the brilliant Oppenheimer is appointed head of the Manhattan Project. Along with General Leslie Groves Jr. (Matt Damon), he must gather the country’s most brilliant minds at Los Alamos to construct what could be a weapon that will be decisive for the war.

But that is just one aspect that illustrates the importance of time in Oppenheimer. Because Nolan tells his film over several temporal levels, paralleling past, present and future. He creates a portrait of a complex man who was ahead of his time, had a decisive influence on it and was struggling with the consequences for the rest of his life.

Hamilton was therefore an important and reliable partner with extensive Hollywood experience for the watches used in the film. Hamilton creations specially designed for the films already appeared in Christopher Nolan’s films Interstellar and Tenet, Will Smith’s Agents J wears a watch from the manufacturer in Men in Black, as do Tony Stark and Steve Rogers in Marvel’s The Avengers.

These Hamilton watches show up in Oppenheimer

Hamilton naturally has an extensive collection of watches, but extraordinary models were made available by collectors to ensure that Oppenheimer’s equipment was as authentic as possible.

A total of six vintage watches appear in the film that fit perfectly into the 1930s and 1940s. Special care was taken to ensure that the models also enrich the character of the respective figures. These are the following pieces:

Three models were chosen for J. Robert Oppenheimer (Cillian Murphy): The Cushion B, Endicot and Lexingtoneach featuring ornate Art Deco elements and following a classic American design.

For Matt Damon’s character, Lieutenant General Leslie Groves Jr., two watches were chosen that fit his rank, priorities, and therefore character.

Christopher Nolan is notoriously a perfectionist, whether setting his story in space like Interstellar or in a historical setting. His new film Oppenheimer covers a period of almost 40 years. Accuracy in the selection of the scenery was therefore all the more important, precisely because it complements the hardly less perfectionist main character J. Robert Oppenheimer. Therefore, special care was taken in selecting the watches worn by Oppenheimer and others.

Oppenheimer has been in German cinemas since July 20th. Next time you visit the must-see epic, take a closer look at the wrists of Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt and Matt Damon.
