In Boden, you should grow in waste heat from the data center – in the middle of the freezing cold winter

The goal is for plants to be able to be moved into the 300 square meter newly built greenhouse in Boden after the holidays in August. The greenhouse is part of the research on how to utilize waste heat from data centers to increase food production in Norrbotten.

“The greenhouse should work when it’s coldest”

– It must work to grow here even in winter when it is coldest. Among other things, we will investigate how temperature and humidity are affected in the greenhouse when it is 30 degrees cold outside, says Håkan Nordin at Boden Development.

Norrbotten’s and Västerbotten’s large data centers today emit heat corresponding to the heating of 20,000 villas straight into the air.

The greenhouse in Boden is the first of its size in Sweden, which is powered by waste heat from a data center, and a further development of the experimental cultivations takes place at the Rise research center in Luleå.

It is no coincidence that this is happening in Boden. The Swedish Energy Agency has appointed Boden as one of seven strategy nodes in Sweden for the development of flexible and robust energy systems, and where greenhouse cultivation in waste heat is one of many projects.
