In Berlin 130 police search for old left wing terrorists

The operation has been looking for former members of the Red Army who lived underground for decades.

A large police operation has begun in Berlin early on Sunday morning to search for former members of the far-left terrorist group Red Army Corps (RAF).

About 130 police officers have participated in the operation in the Friedrichshain area. The police have arrested at least two men, whose identity has not yet been confirmed, the newspapers say Bild and tagesspiel.

According to the newspapers, shots were fired in the area, but no one was injured.

The operation has been looking for former members of the RAF who lived underground for decades Ernst-Volker Staub and Burkhard Garwegia.

Earlier this week, the police arrested a 65-year-old member of the group in Berlin Daniela Klettenwhich had also been sought for decades.

In 2016, it was reported that Staub, Garweg and Kletten, who lived underground, were also wanted for new crimes, the robberies of supermarkets and valuables in 2015 and 2016.

The Red Army Corps RAF was also known as the Baader–Meinhof Group. Members of the group committed dozens of terrorist attacks and murders in Germany in the 1970s and 1990s.
