A flash move came from the Belgian government regarding the increasing refugee issue in the world. The Belgian government announced that they would not implement the court’s decision on ‘single male asylum seekers’.
“SINGLE MEN SHOULD FIND THEM FOR THEMSELVES”
Last month, Belgian Minister of Foreign Affairs for Asylum and Migration, Nicole de Moor, stated that a housing shortage was expected for asylum seekers in the country and that they wanted to “prevent children from staying on the streets this winter.”
In this context, Moor stated that single male refugees should not be allowed into the country and that they should fend for themselves.
THE COURT REVERSED THIS DECISION
Human rights organizations and aid organizations brought the issue regarding this decision of the government to the Council of State.
The court ruled that the government’s decision did not respect the rights that all asylum seekers should have when their applications for international protection are being examined.
The Belgian government stated that they would not implement the court’s decision.
ASYLUM REQUESTS CAUSE SIGNIFICANT PROBLEMS IN BELGIUM
Belgium has long been criticized for failing to provide adequate shelter for thousands of people who say they want protection from persecution in their home countries. In recent years, long queues of tents have regularly formed on the streets outside the center of Brussels.
De Moor complained that the shelters were filled to almost 33,500 capacity by asylum seekers who flocked to the country of 11.5 million people in the last two years. Federal agency Fedasil said that approximately 37 thousand protection applications were made to Belgium last year.
In addition to asylum seekers, Belgium is also helping approximately 62 thousand Ukrainian refugees who fled Russia’s war against their country.
