In Baldur’s Gate 3 you can only take 4 characters with you – unless you get creative

Baldur’s Gate 3 limits your party size to a maximum of four characters – including your own. On Reddit, players are currently discussing which of their many companions is a long-term camper. However, there is a new mod that solves the problem for you.

What is the party limit in Baldur’s Gate 3? In a regular run in Baldur’s Gate 3, you can have a maximum of four different party members at the same time. In a single-player run, this is your character, i.e. a Tav or one of the Origin characters, as well as three companions.

Even in a multi-player run, you can only have a maximum of four people. If your group is full of players, you can’t take companions like Lae’zel, Schattenherz and Astarion with you on the big adventure.

How many companions are there? In total you can unlock ten different companions during the game. In Act 1 you meet six of them, all of whom were traveling with you on the Nautiloid: Lae’zel, Shadowheart, Gale, Wyll, Astarion and Karlach.

You can add the companions Halsin and Minthara to your party in Act 2, depending on whether you are playing a good or evil run. Since a patch, it should now be possible to recruit Minthara if you have a good run.

The final two companions are Jaheira and Minsc, two characters from the first game in the Baldur’s Gate series. Jaheira can join you at the end of Act 2. Minsc, on the other hand, can only be found in Act 3.

Unfortunately, only 4 characters fit into the party – but the players are creative

Who are Reddit users leaving at home? In a Reddit thread, the players discuss who they always have to leave in the camp due to space constraints. At the forefront is Wyll, the game’s sorcerer, as well as Halsin, Jaheira and Minsc, who join later.

Every player has their own reasons:

  • LJMLogan: You just get Minsc way too late in the game. The same applies to Jaheira, even if I took her with me once.
  • Old-Ordinary-6194: For me it’s Halsin. I like Jaheira better.
  • maleficent0: Wyll is just hanging around, drinking himself into a coma I guess. Most of the time Karlach is there too, which I feel bad about, but I like Lae’zel more. Gale and Astarion never have a break.
  • Api_Biru: Minsc, to be honest. At the point when he joins, each Companion, including Tav, has a specific role on the team that I’m already familiar with.
  • Overfailers: Astarion indeed. An unpopular opinion, but I don’t understand the guy.
  • Many of the players are sad that they cannot have all characters on the team at the same time. Or at least a few more. In fact, there is now a mod for exactly that.

What kind of mod can work around the problem? Most of the mods for Baldur’s Gate 3 are cosmetic. These include Man-Bun-Gale or mods that give you early access to the rare camp clothes from Act 3.

With Party Limit Begone on Nexusmod, however, you can bypass the base game group limit. The mod increases the group limit from four to a maximum of 16. That’s more than enough places for all 10 possible companions and five other players.

This allows you to hear all the different dialogues between the characters. You can also advance all companion storylines without having to swap your team.

The disadvantage is that the game’s balancing is completely useless. All fights at all levels of difficulty are always designed so that you can fight them with a maximum of four group members – possibly with the help of summons.

But if 16 characters at level 12 show up at the final boss in Act 3, it will probably be a short-lived experience.

Larian Studios recently released Hotfix 16 for the game. In addition to many bug fixes, there is now a new, major problem: After the last hotfix, some players can no longer complete important quests.
