In an SF thriller that too few have seen, the Earth has become uninhabitable

The science fiction thriller Tides with Ian Glen (Game of Thrones) and Nora Arnezeder is running on Amazon Prime. MeinMMO author Schuhmann: This is a clever and realistic film that takes us into a post-apocalypse future that does not have zombies, but still shows people at their worst.

This is the situation of the film:

In “Tides,” humanity destroyed the Earth but survived. The earth is flooded, the polar ice caps have apparently melted and large parts have become uninhabitable. However, the elite of humanity escaped into space and built a colony on Kepler-209.

But humanity cannot survive there: the radiation from Kepler makes women infertile and humanity is on the verge of extinction. A team has already been sent back to Earth to check whether repopulation is possible, but we don’t hear anything from them anymore.

We accompany a trio of researchers whose space capsule deposits a rupture charge on the flooded and devastated earth.

Tides starts like a horror film, but then asks exciting questions

This is what is special about the film: The 104-minute thriller falls into two halves:

  • In the first aid we see the inhospitable earth and how difficult it is to survive there. There is hardly any conversation, everything is unreal and strange. Tides is like a horror film here
  • In the second half the film becomes more science fiction. He creates an exciting colonial scenario and asks questions about which borders one must and may cross in order to save humanity
  • Ian Glen, known from Game of Thrones, shines in Tides as a charismatic but dubious character who would like to be a hero and the savior of humanity, but has many of the characteristics of a villain. Tides raises questions that are reminiscent of the colonial era.

Why is the film not well known? Tides comes from a Swiss director and was shot in Germany on the island of Neuwerk and in Basel.

Although it won numerous awards in Germany and Switzerland, it was not a commercial success, grossing approximately $377,000 at the worldwide box office.

You can watch Tides on Amazon Prime. It is available in German.
