In a new survival MMO you fight against robo-bears on a post-apocalyptic Soviet island

The survival MMO PIONER is back with a new trailer. This shows more of the post-apocalyptic game world and its dangers, including a robo-bear with a built-in flamethrower.

What kind of game is this? PIONER is an upcoming survival MMO from indie developer GFA Games. The game was announced at E3 2021 and was originally supposed to be released in 2022 at the latest, but the release was postponed several times.

In a fresh trailer for PIONER, the developers show more gameplay. They are also announcing a new release window – the survival MMO is scheduled to appear for the PC on Steam in 2025.

Sci-fi post-apocalypse in the Soviet era

What does the trailer show? PIONER mixes the Soviet look known from the STALKER series, among others, with a sledgehammer full of post-apocalypse. The lighting mood and color palette make the world appear particularly desolate and gloomy.

Players land on a mysterious island called Tartarus. This island has many deadly creatures: in the trailer you can see, among other things, mutated people, giant spiders and even a robot bear that can breathe fire.

But even more dangerous than any flame-spitting robo-bear are the people you share the island with. Within certain areas of the Shadowlands there is particularly valuable loot that players will fight each other for.

If you have less interest in PvP, focus on the PvE missions and story quests. According to the developers, the story is inspired by classic science fiction and is filled with complex characters and factions. Fans of story games should get their money’s worth.

Weapon modifications and survival aspects

In addition to classic shooting irons, PIONER offers a variety of improvised weapons. So you keep enemies at a distance with a spear, hit them with a screwdriver or set them on fire with a flaming sword. Weapons can be modified and personalized with a variety of modules and designs.

It’s not just your skill in using your own weapons that determines your success or failure: hunger, peace and resources also need to be managed. Otherwise, things will look pretty bleak not only for the world, but also for your survival on Tartarus.

If PIONER actually appears in 2025, despite postponements, only 4 years have passed since the first announcement. Fans of STALKER 2 can only smile wearily: The survival shooter was released in November 2024 after over 14 years of development, but not in good technical condition. A STALKER 2 developer explains why.
