The game Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate brings you a special version of chess on Steam. Instead of an army, you fight the opposing side with a shotgun.

Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate is a roguelike chess-style strategy game in which you have to plan your moves well in order to beat your opponents.

But the chess game has a very special twist: You play the black king, a rather unpopular ruler among the people. As a result, your entire army has now deserted you and defected to the white king.

You are left with nothing but one item: your royal shotgun. Extremely offended by the actions of your followers, you embark on a vendetta to get even with the white pieces.

The game is verified for the Steam Deck and works very well there.

Defeat the white army and its king

What is the gameplay like in the game? The gameplay is based on turn-based moves. In each round you can:

  • move the king
  • fire with the shotgun

    • To recharge the weapon after a shot, you have to move. At the same time, you have to be careful that the white pieces don’t bring you into checkmate.

    To successfully complete a level, you must hunt down the white king. Once you have done that, you can then choose a random combination of two upgrades, as is often the case with roguelikes.

    The trick, though, is that one upgrade is for you and the other for the opposing side. Here, for example, additional figures can be added to the field or certain special conditions apply in the game, for example:

  • Only the opponent’s king may come close to your character
  • Additional ammo and range for your shotgun
  • Fewer enemy units on the field

    • If you’re successful at shotgun chess, you might be able to win all the levels and win back your kingdom.

    Each pass takes about 20 minutes. In the game you can choose between 15 different levels of difficulty and always unlock new maps. You also have an endless and a hunt mode available.

    How do players rate Shotgun King: The Final Checkmate? The game is doing very well on Steam. Out of a total of 3,014 ratings, 93% are good game ratings (via Steam, as of February 18, 2023).
