In a few weeks, it will no longer be possible to use a type of tire on certain roads in France. It’s high time to check which ones are fitted to your car to avoid a fine!

Unless you are a car enthusiast, it is very likely that you do not know the characteristics of your car’s tires and perhaps not even their brand! And that is quite logical: as long as they are in good condition, everything is fine. However, if you drive in certain regions of France, you should take a closer look, in particular by checking their type. Because in a few weeks, certain models will be purely and simply banned!

For several years, the Mountain Law has required all vehicles driving in certain mountainous areas of France to be equipped with winter tires or anti-skid devices, such as chains or snow socks. This regulation applies in 48 departments between November 1st and March 31st, even if you are just passing through these regions. Until now, there was some flexibility allowing the use of All-season tires, marked M+S (Mud and Snow). But this will change from next winter. If you are used to driving with these tires, it is high time to take a look at your equipment.

Indeed, as of November 1, 2024, tires with the M+S stamp alone will no longer be accepted for use on mountain roads where winter equipment is mandatory. The tolerance that prevailed until then will end, and only tires bearing the 3PMSF (Three Peak Mountain Snowflake) logo, recognizable by their symbol representing a mountain with three peaks and a snowflake, will be authorized.

Why this change? The reason is simple: tires marked 3PMSF offer much better grip on snow, ice and other slippery surfaces, because they are subjected to rigorous laboratory tests. Unlike M+S tires, which do not meet a specific winter performance standard, 3PMSF tires guarantee increased safety in extreme conditions. They are therefore better suited to the requirements of the Mountain Law, which aims to reduce the number of accidents on the roads in winter.

In fact, if your current tires only have the M+S marking, you will have to change them before November 2024. Driving with non-compliant tires after this date could expose you to a fine of 135 euros and even to the immobilization of your vehicle. It is better to anticipate this change now to avoid unpleasant surprises!

And, above all, be very careful and wary of good deals that might not be. Because while many all-season tires are already available with the 3PMSF marking, some sellers continue to offer tires marked M+S, often at attractive prices, without mentioning that they will soon be banned. It would be a shame to spend money on tires that you won’t need in a few months!
