In a €15 shooter you have to use your brain with every shot because you only have one bullet per level

Children of the Sun is a dark shooter on Steam in which you not only pull the trigger, but also control the bullet.

What kind of game is this? Children of the Sun (Steam) is a mix of shooter and puzzle game. You take on the role of the protagonist, who is simply called “the girl,” and goes into battle against a cult with a sniper rifle. This cult carries out atrocities for its master.

As the story progresses, you have to complete different levels, each time with the same goal: Kill all the cultists.

However, in each level you only have a single bullet to eliminate several enemies. Fortunately, the protagonist has the ability to direct the fired bullets in the air and to re-aim them after a hit to direct them to the next enemy.

The gameplay is therefore not a classic shooter. You don’t run around the map and fire weapons around you unbridled. Instead, you press the trigger once and then control the fired bullet through the level. The challenge is to find a way to eliminate all opponents without missing a shot, despite obstacles.

What makes the game special? The unique selling point of Children of the Sun is clearly the ability to influence the trajectory of the ball in order to complete the puzzle-like levels. Nevertheless, it also stands out because of its colorful and dark art style, which creates an oppressive atmosphere.

Children of the Sun is also suitable for gamers who don’t normally play shooters, as you only control the entire game with the mouse. This means that the puzzle shooter also works very well as a “casual game”.

How is the game received? Children of the Sun celebrated its release on Steam on April 9, 2024, but since the shooter is the project of a small indie developer, not many reviews are available yet.

Children of the Sun has collected 174 player reviews on Steam since its release, but 95% of them are positive. Players particularly praise that the short playing time of just under 2-4 hours was fun and that the vibe and presentation were right.

Players write in their reviews:

  • “Even though Children of the Sun is short, it’s the perfect length for what it is.”
  • “The game is very short and concise, but allows you to repeat the levels to increase your score on the leaderboards. […] I can only recommend this game.”
  • “Too short, but an absolute pleasure. For the low price I would recommend it.”
  • “Is it an outstanding two-hour experience with more style than most games have in their entire runtime? In any case.”
  • So if you’re looking for a short game that you can play through quickly, Childen of the Sun might be worth a look. But if that’s too much puzzle gameplay and not enough shooter for you, then take a look here:
