It’s not as if Emma Stone has to prove to anyone what a terrific actress she is. In the past few months, however, she has had a run that most Hollywood stars can only dream of. First she shone in the dark sci-fi fantasy tale Poor Things, then in the idiosyncratic meta series The Curse, which became more bizarre with each episode.
Now the next celebrated work is announced with the two-time Oscar winner Kinds of Kindness. The episodic film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May and has been receiving the wildest reviews ever since. Co-star Jesse Plemons (Killers of the Flower Moon) has also made a promise that is causing a stir. Kinds of Kindness is likely to generate a lot of discussion.

At first glance, Kinds of Kindness sounds quite unspectacular. The episodic film tells three independent stories about people living in the USA today. So far, so ordinary. But with a look at the credits, the ordinariness takes on a abrupt end. The film was directed by Yorgos Lanthimos.
The Greek director and screenwriter is known for turning the world upside down in his films and for sending his characters into a spiral never-ending abysses to sink. Just a laugh, then the shock: In addition to Poor Things, he also filmed the biting and dark historical drama The Favourite with Stone.
In each of his films, Lanthimos pursues disturbing thought experiments, which he stages like Wes Anderson’s version of Bizarro. The almost three-hour-long Kinds of Kindness features three of these uncomfortable stories No wonder that this volume sooner or later turned Plemons’ stomach.

Kinds of Kindness starts on July 4, 2024 in German cinemas. In addition to Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons, the cast includes Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie and Hunter Schafer.
