In 7 days one of the biggest Netflix series returns

If we look at Netflix’s all-time lists, sooner or later we come across Jeffrey Dahmer. The serial killer was chosen as the main character of the anthology series Monster in 2022. With Evan Peters as Dahmer, the production by American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy rose to become one of the most successful Netflix series ever.

Worldwide, Squid Game reigns supreme, but In the English-speaking world, only Wednesday and Stranger Things Season 4 are ahead of the first Monster Season. 115 million views and over a billion hours watched – these are impressive numbers and reason enough for a sequel.

Next week, the second season of Monster starts, titled Monster: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. Instead of a serial killer, this time the focus is on a crime within a family that became a media phenomenon in the USA in the 1990s.

Monster Season 2 tells the true story of the Menéndez brothers

The story centers on the brothers Lyle (Nicholas Chavez) and Erik Menéndez (Cooper Koch), who, after the brutal murder of her parents in 1989 become the main suspects. While the prosecution claimed greed for the family fortune as a motive, the brothers insisted that their crime was connected to the physical and emotional abuse by their parents.

The trial became a ratings hit in 1993 and the story of the Menéndez brothers found its way into films and series as diverse as Natural Born Killers, Cable Guy and Married with Children.

Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan are revisiting the case as a drama series, with Oscar winner Javier Bardem as father José Menéndez and Chloë Sevigny as wife and mother Kitty. Murphy already has a lot of experience with court cases. His series American Crime Story already dealt with another 90s trial: the OJ Simpson case.

Like the previous season, Monster now focuses on the question: Who are the real monsters? Nine episodes are available to find the answer. The entire season will be released on Netflix on September 19th.
