An elderly Skåne man and his son have been sentenced to prison for serious welfare offences. For several years, they have incorrectly received SEK 7.4 million in assistance compensation, writes Sydsvenskan.

The mess was rolled up when the son, who was employed full-time as the father’s personal assistant, was to be arrested in 2019 for other crimes. During the police visit to the father’s home, he proved to be significantly more capable of fending for himself than expected.

The Social Insurance Agency was tipped off and the investigation led to a new assessment that the father did not need personal assistance at all.

Now the father has been sentenced to two years and nine months in prison for 72 cases of serious child support offenses between 2014 and 2020.

The scam must have been going on since 2007 – but the first years’ payments are time-barred.

The son is sentenced to three years and nine months in prison for 67 serious contribution offences. His sentence also includes unlawful stalking and unlawful threats against two acquaintances.

Two other people who received compensation for having worked as assistants for the elderly man receive suspended sentences.
