A man in western Jämtland has been sentenced to six months in prison for gross animal cruelty, reports Östersunds-Posten.

During a check in January last year, the County Administrative Board found twelve severely depleted calves that were in such poor condition that they had to be killed.

The man has pointed to problems with technical equipment as well as personal difficulties that explanations for the incident, but the district court finds that he has been grossly negligent.

In addition to the prison sentence, the man will also pay a fee to the Crime Victims Fund.

His lawyer Andreas Victor states that it is still too early to say whether the verdict will be appealed or not.
