This year’s press freedom award goes to Iranian journalists Nilufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, who are imprisoned in Iran after reporting on the death of Mahsa Amini in September 2022.
In the justification, Swedish Reporters without Borders (RSF) writes, among other things, that Nilufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi “through their courageous journalistic reporting in Iran have been on the front line together with many other female journalists who have been imprisoned and silenced by a regime that does everything to stop freedom of the press and Women’s rights”.
The prize is awarded at an event in Stockholm during the International Press Freedom Day on May 3.
Since 2003, Reporters Without Borders has been awarding the Swedish press freedom award “to brave and independent journalists who, through their work, have contributed to strengthening press freedom”.
