Imprese Aiello PhD needs to increase knowledge of ones skills

(Finance) – The Emblem Foundation was born with the aim of “improve the employment of PhDs highlighting how fundamental it is to act on job orientation within doctoral programs ” President of the Emblema Foundation, Tommaso Aielloat the opening of the proceedings of the 2022 edition of Focus forDoc of the Placement Exchangeentitled “From Doctorate to Business: expectations and reality”.

“The more knowledge there will be of the world of work, the easier it will be to understand how to approach it correctly and how to identify the best companies in which to enhance one’s specialization”, Aiello said at the event designed to stimulate a comparison between universities and companies on the theme of the job placement of PhDs, held in the Faculty Council Room of the Polytechnic of Turin.

“To improve the employment situation of highly specialized profiles – he underlined – is it is essential that universities and companies talk about placement and employability already during the PhD courses, to make companies understand the opportunities that can derive from the inclusion of these extraordinary resources “.

The event was attended by representatives of the academic and business world including Guido SaraccoRector of the Polytechnic of Turin; Margherita Azzoni TognolaHR Manager of Huawei; Andrea MartialHead of Modeling & Pricing of A2A e Luca dell’AttiNational Secretary of ADI – the Italian Association of PhD Students and Research Doctors.

It was presented by Fondazione Emblema una survey on a sample of 233 companies, of which more than half are large enterprises with more than 250 employees and 39% are micro enterprises and SMEs. The survey, the only one of its kind in Italy, wanted to highlight how structured and innovative companies see PhDs and revealed that 92% of contacts between Companies and PhDs was born within the University. 49% of companies that do not have PhDs among their employees declare that they have never received applications from this target and that in 78% of casesin a selection process, the the first interlocutor is a contact person for human resources, not a technician. This highlights how important it is for the PhD candidate to be able to communicate the usefulness of his or her specialization and understand that, in any case, personal characteristics always have a great importance in the insertion of a new resource in the company.

“From the survey we have proposed, some important commonplaces are denied: the grading of a PhD is often better than that of a recent graduate and the fact that doctors almost always make their careers faster”, concludes Tommaso Aiello, reiterating that “we should go from ‘I respond to ads’ to ‘I understand who my specialization can serve and I propose’ having in mind the characteristics most sought after by recruiters”.
