The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been on hold for six years. Between 2003 and 2017, the fantasy series was immensely successful. However, Pirates of the Caribbean 5 fell short of expectations – that and the controversy surrounding leading actor Johnny Depp put the brakes on plans for part 6.
After half an eternity there is now one new status to continue. We round up the latest developments and what they mean for the future of the series and Johnny Depp’s potential return as Jack Sparrow.
There are two stories for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 and one of them is “too bizarre”
Two scripts for Pirates of the Caribbean 6 are circulating at Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean studio. The first story comes from Christina Hodson (Bumblebee), who focuses on Barbie star Margot Robbie. For a long time, this version was the favorite of those responsible – until the plans were surprisingly discarded.
Instead, the draft that Craig Mazin (The Last of Us) wrote with Caribbean veteran Ted Elliott is currently preferred. Mazin described to the LA Times how he pitched his idea to Disney. The reaction surprised him.

The process of the fantasy blockbuster seems surprisingly advanced. According to Mazin, the ongoing double strike in Hollywood interrupted preparations. Since “wait everyone.Whether this “everyone” also includes Jack Sparrow actor Johnny Depp is an open question. Hodson’s draft would probably have excluded Sparrow and taken a completely new direction with Robbie. Mazin’s version could be different.
After the high-profile court hearing with Amber Heard, Johnny Depp’s rehabilitation in Hollywood is hinted at. And with Jerry Bruckheimer, the most important patron did not explicitly rule out Depp’s comeback.
So if you’re hoping for more Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean 6, you can keep doing it.
