Important details when buying tires Easy to be deceived

Tires are not only a consumable, but also a fresh product.

Tires that are a few years old do not perform as well as brand new ones, as the rubber dries and becomes less elastic over time. When you buy new tires, you therefore want them to be as fresh as possible, but this is a detail that many people forget to check.

Was sold ten year old tires

It is often said that it is okay for a tire up to three years old to be sold as new, and that a tire has reached its maximum useful life after 7 to 10 years.

However, there are no rules regarding how old a tire sold as new may be. There are also no requirements on how old a tire can be, but if the tire is so old that it has started to develop dry cracks, the inspection may be rejected.

Carup have spoken to a car owner who bought new tires a couple of years ago, and later discovered they were over 10 years old.

The tires that the tire workshop delivered were manufactured during week 43 of 2012, which means that they are older than the car they are mounted on.

How to check the age of the tire

There is no data on how widespread the problem of car owners being sold old tires is, but luckily it is easy to check the age of the tires you are about to buy.

Perhaps the easiest method is to simply ask the person buying the tires how old they are. A more manual method is to look at the side of the tire, where there is a so-called DOT code, which shows where the tire was manufactured and when.

The age of the tire is indicated by four numbers at the end of the DOT code, which indicate the week and date the tire was manufactured. The tire in the picture, with the code 4214, was manufactured in week 42 of 2014, for example.
