At its core, the Immortals of Aveum is about ‘Everwar’, a seemingly endless conflict that has been going on for generations. This endless war between the two most powerful kingdoms of Aveum vie for control of ley lines, described as massive conduits of magical power.

Set in this battle, our protagonist, Jak, grows weak (reminds us a bit of Raistlin’s story) and turns into a warmage, then joins forces with the Immortals to fend off the approaching Rasharn threat. Leading the attack, Sandrakk is a major villain, backed by a second-in-command simply referred to as ‘The Hand’ (it would be a lie if we say that reminds me of Iron Fist).

Where exactly this narrative will go next, and who will emerge victorious from Everwar, is something we need to resolve in 25+ hours of gameplay.

We know what Immortals of Aveum is about and who’s in it, so what exactly are we doing in the game? What propels us through the epic fantasy story is an explosive FPS loop using warmage spells instead of real firearms.

As a Triarch, Jak can manipulate all three types of magical powers that reside in the lands of the Aveum. By switching between these powers, we’re able to fire up a series of unique abilities that mirror the movements of weapons that you might be familiar with from other FPS games from an angle. For example, one spell can mimic the effects of a shotgun explosion, while another can serve as a fully automatic weapon tracking targets like the Needler in Halo.

But jumping from one battle sequence to the next is only part of the flow. Players will find a balance of Metroidvania-esque exploration and even puzzles that require magical prowess to complete. So it would be wise not to wait for a 25 hour corridor shooter from start to finish.
