Totally Killer is the big new film on Amazon Prime. What at first glance looks like an ordinary slasher turns out to be one upon closer inspection crazy mix of genres. A bit of Back to the Future, a bit of Scream – all garnished with the coming-of-age ingredients of Girls Club.
Horror highlight on Amazon Prime: In Totally Killer, Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to stop a killer
Totally Killer tells the story of young Jamie (Kiernan Shipka), who plunges headlong into a time travel adventure to… Sweet Sixteen Killer to stop the man who is up to mischief on Halloween night. He has already killed her mother Pam’s (Julie Bowen) high school friends. Jamie really wants to prevent that.
When she arrives in 1987, she discovers that her teenage mother (Olivia Holt) was not as kind and accommodating as she is in the present. Instead, she turns out to be mean high school diva, which makes everyday school life hell for everyone. However, this doesn’t impress the killer at all.

Even though Totally Killer doesn’t reinvent the slasher wheel, the film has been well received by critics so far. The mixture of the Meta horror and Disney Channel vibes is very well received in many meetings. IGN summarizes:
[Totally Killer] is a great homage to many well-known slashers from the emotional course of the story and its cast. However, it’s not quite an ‘introductory horror’ as some of the kills may be too advanced for a younger audience. Still, the film is definitely for teenagers who are curious about the genre […].
It is also particularly praiseworthy Lead actress Kiernan Shipka, who was able to demonstrate her acting talent in series hits such as Mad Men and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina. The Slash Film review states:
Kiernan Shipka is the reason why people will talk about Totally Killereven if the film’s house of cards foundation is on the verge of collapsing at any second.
Meanwhile, Collider draws a comparison to two other films that have a similar tone: Freaky and Happy Deathday.
Although I [in Totally Killer] More honesty desired (a benchmark for most 80s films), the concept is reminiscent of other modern slashers like Freaky and Happy Death Day, a good sign that the subgenre isn’t quite dead yet.
Totally Killer is now streaming on Amazon Prime. The film was directed by Nahnatchka Khan, who has been a screenwriter since the late 1990s many comedy projects and delivered her first feature film as a director four years ago with Always Be My Maybe.
