The current owner, Jan van Hassel (65), lives in an apartment above the shop. Jazz records hang on the wall, a tuba stands on the floor, a xylophone next to his bed. Lately, the bookcase has mainly been filled with travel and photo books. The bookseller is not much of a reader. “I’m more visual.” In the late 1980s, Van Hassel studied art history and had a part-time job at bookstore De Slegte. He bought second-hand books and determined the new store prices.
