An image on the island of Rhodes, one of the most popular holiday resorts in Greece, garnered great reaction on social media. The international public opinion was divided into two when a waiter took orders to the ‘box’ by walking in the water that came up to his waist with his clothes on…
INVESTIGATION STARTED AFTER THE IMAGES
After the images that caused outrage on social media, the Greek authorities took action.
While it was learned that the owner of the ‘beach club’ in Rhodes also operates the canteen of the Greek parliament, Greek Minister of Labor Adonis Georgiadis and Maritime Minister Miltiadis Varvitsiotis announced that an investigation has been launched on the subject.
Minister Georgiadis stated that the images were sickening and said, “I sent the inspectors as soon as I saw them. We should all understand that the age of slavery is over. Employees are not slaves, they are people with rights. We are here to get these rights. Every business person who forgets this will be rewarded for it.”
WAITER OR SLAVE?
In a short time, the reactions from social media users to the images shared by thousands of people grew like an avalanche.
While one user emphasized that the conditions of those working in the service sector were very bad, another user said, “Waiters are not slaves.”
Stamoulis Athanasios, President of the Rhodes Hotel Employees Union, also made a statement after the images and stated that the incident was disturbing.
The waiter is satisfied with the situation
The waiter in the images made statements to the Greek media.
Expressing that he was satisfied with his situation, the young waiter said, “I don’t mind being like this. In this way, I get tips up to 200 Euros a day.”
