“I’m terrified of it”

Im terrified of it

Can Barbie work as a multi-million dollar live-action movie in cinemas? For more than a decade, Hollywood has been asking itself this question. Now director Greta Gerwig has one phenomenal film adaptation of the material and confirmed her status as one of the most exciting directing voices in Hollywood.

Barbie is one of the most inventive blockbusters of recent years. Next up is Gerwig another dusty brand bring back: Narnia. In 2018, Netflix secured the rights to the CS Lewis-created fantasy series previously released by Disney and 20th Century Fox.

After Barbia comes a fantasy epic: Greta Gerwig is shooting two Narnia films for Netflix

Netflix was able to win Gerwig for two new Narnia films. As the filmmaker reveals in the Total Film podcast, the major project is still in its infancy.

I haven’t got it right yet [mit der Arbeit an Narnia] started, but I’m really scared of it, which is generally a good sign. […] If I’m not afraid, I might think, ‘Maybe I shouldn’t do this.’ I’m terrified of it. It is extraordinary. And it’s exciting.

Gerwig has not yet staged a fantasy epic. But she knows all the better about coming-of-age films. With her first two directorial credits, Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019), she narrated deeply touching stories about the leap into adulthood. This definitely fits Narnia, where the four Pevensie siblings have to push themselves in the eponymous fantasy world.

Fantasy Reboot: When does Greta Gerwig’s Narnia start on Netflix?

As I said, the project is still in its infancy. Before 2025 shouldn’t we expect the Narnia movies to launch on Netflix. Since Thursday you can watch Gerwig’s fantastic Barbie film (in a double feature with Oppenheimer) in the cinema and convince yourself of her skills as a blockbuster director.
