I’m hooked on a horror game on the PS5, even though all I have to do is catch smelly fish

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

A new game on the PS5 showed me that not all Fischer games are monotonous bores that are repeated over and over again. After introducing you to Dredge, you’ll see why the game hooked me. A game presentation by our freelance author Christos Tsogos.

What is Dredge about? Finally a new game that convinced me to buy it. It’s called Dredge and is a mix of horror, adventure and fishing game. As fun as the mix may sound, it harmonizes very well and quickly pulls you into a world that you don’t want to leave so quickly.

You play a sailor who follows a job advertisement as a fisherman. Before you arrive, however, a mysterious fog descends and your boat capsizes. The image blackens and you find yourself on a wet dock near a village. The mayor of this island notices you and now welcomes you as a new fisherman.

After your arrival you can cast off with your cutter and steer it yourself

You landed on Großmark and lost your boat due to the serious damage caused by your accident. However, the mayor has provided a replacement, but you will have to pay for this with future fish catches. So far the game looks like a normal fishing game, but now comes the exciting part – the mysteries and mysteries.

What makes Dredge so good? The game tells its story through the dialogues with the different characters on the surrounding islands and on Großmark. So you will quickly discover through these conversations that something is wrong.

There are also various mysteries waiting to be revealed, such as:

  • What is it about fog?
  • Why is there wreckage from old ships everywhere?
  • Why is it dangerous at night?
  • What is it about the red, mystical lights that shine up on the horizon?
  • Why is everyone on the islands so weird?
  • Why can’t I just be a regular fisherman?!
  • Gradually you will get to know more people who can teach you or tell you a lot.

The night and its fog does not ensure a clear view and causes your sailor to “panic” – be careful

In addition, you can pimp your steamer and upgrade your equipment to catch more fish or stay longer in the dark. To do this, you have to catch fish from a total of 128 species and sell them at a fish market.

On top of that, the game offers a harmonious and mysterious music and a large map with many biomes waiting to be explored. Mysteries and secrets can also be found, you just have to dare to look for them.

    To bring you all closer…

Each of the NPCs advised me not to go out with my cutter at night. However, since we are human and love to take risks, I thought “Can’t it be that bad?”. Despite the warnings, I went back up on my cutter and out into the night to fish – at least until the fog had completely engulfed the ship.

Now I thought to myself “Great, and how do I find my way back to the village now?”. Bright buoys and a lighthouse therefore served my orientation, but only until my ship bumped into some rocks. The longer I stayed in the dark, the more my sailor panicked.

This caused him to see things like rocks later. Upset by the collision, I saw another manned cutter in the depths of darkness. A sense of relief came over me as I thought this was another fisherman… Well, I guessed wrong.

So I drove closer and closer to the boat until it turned into a huge frogfish with an open mouth and completely demolished my cutter. Startled by the incident, I asked myself “How the hell? What has happened there? What is that thing?!”. My seafarer just about made it to the village with the wrecked cutter, but my question marks grew bigger and bigger.

How much does Dredge cost? The game costs €24.99 and can be purchased on PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch as well as Steam.

Conclusion – For whom is the game worthwhile? The game is especially worthwhile for the players who love to solve mysteries. Dredge pulls you into this mysterious world and makes you root for your sailor. Scary things are also guaranteed, because I underestimated the night and was taught better.

However, if you just want to fish and listen to the relaxing music, then go ahead. You have 128 fish and an encyclopedia to fill. There are also side quests, such as transport tasks or ordering fish. Either way, there is something for everyone, but do you have what it takes to face the high seas?
