Illegal deforestation threatens the Congo Basin forest, according to an investigation by the British NGO Global Witness published on Wednesday. According to the authors, this deforestation is partly driven by demand from consumer countries, notably China. Global Witness accuses Chinese giant Congo King Baisheng Forestry Development (CKBFD) of exporting more than $5 million worth of illegal timber from the DRC over a six-month period. And this, despite its international commitments to fight against deforestation.
