Iga Swiatek to the title at the US Open – the Polish star got a sweet surprise at the press conference: “My God, who did this?”

Iga Swiatek, 21, won the third grand slam of his career. In the final match, he defeated Tunisia’s Ons Jabeur straight in two sets.

Iga Swiatek has won the US Open women’s singles championship as the first Pole. Swiatek, 21, beat Tunisia in the final match played in New York Ons Jabeurin set 6–2, 7–6 (7–5).

After the opening set, world number one Swiatek seemed to roll to victory and led the second set 3–0, but Jabeur narrowed it down to 2–3. Swiatek decided the victory with the second match point after less than two hours of drilling.

– It is difficult to describe this feeling in one sentence. But I’m really proud of myself because the match wasn’t easy, even though I dominated at the beginning. I knew it was going to be tough and that Ons would punish me for any mistakes I made.

Swiatek, who earned US$2.6 million with his win, planned to celebrate the championship by going to see a Broadway musical in New York.

– I don’t want to tell the name of the musical because I want to be in peace for a while, Swiatek laughed.

The grand slam tournament win is the third of Swiatek’s career. She previously won the French Open in 2020 and 2022. Swiatek, who has won seven WTA tournaments this season, was on a wild 37-match winning streak earlier this season – the longest in the entire 2000s.

The most observant may have noticed that after both of his grand slam wins of the season, Swiatek has looked into the trophy immediately after receiving it – and both times it has been empty.

Now the tournament organizers were able to surprise the Polish star at the press conference after the final. Swiatek was prompted to peek inside the trophy again, and he found his favorite treat, tiramisu.

– My God, are you serious? Who did this? Did you do this? Swiatek asked a spokesperson for the US Tennis Association From Chris Widmaier.

– Yes, it’s from the US Open. We noticed that you always look inside the trophy, so this time we wanted you to find something, Widmaier replied.

– Thank you. I really appreciate this, especially since I haven’t had time to eat yet, Swiatek smiled.

“The win confirmed for me that the sky is the limit”

Swiatek says that he did not expect such success from this season, even though he already won the first grand slam of his career two years ago in Paris.

– I really didn’t expect this, but the victory confirmed for me that the sky is the limit. I’m a little surprised, but happy, Swiatek said.

– At the beginning of the season, I thought that maybe I can do well in WTA tournaments. When I got to the semi-finals at the Australian Open, I wasn’t sure if my level was good enough to win a grand slam, especially the US Open, because the court is so fast.

Swiatek is the first woman in six years to win two grand slams in one season. In 2016, it succeeded Angelique Kerber.

The men’s final will be played on Sunday evening at 23:00 Finnish time. They will meet Norway there Casper Ruud and Spain Carlos Alcaraz.
