iFixit, the reference in electronic device repair, now offers kits for different game consoles. With their affordable price, they will delight gamers and budding DIYers!
To combat the obsolescence of electrical and electronic devices, which are a real disaster for the environment, it is better to repair them when they are broken rather than buying new ones. To extend their lifespan, iFixit, the DIY repair specialist since 2003, offers many tool kits to tackle the most common breakdowns without breaking the bank. This time, it is turning to the gaming community with new specialized repair kits for PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch.
iFixit: Affordable Repair Kits
Designed for repair, maintenance and upgrade, iFixit’s new kits allow novice and expert DIYers to change a broken screen, repair a joystick, replace a faulty fan or even add an SSD to benefit from better storage space.
For several years now, iFixit has offered the Pro Tech Toolkit, a very complete kit that allows you to tackle the repair of almost any electronic device. But its price of €74.99 is not within everyone’s reach. Especially since you don’t necessarily need all this gear.
Luckily, iFixit is launching new kits that are much more affordable. Priced between €17.95 and €19.95, they are aimed at game consoles, including laptops. To keep this price affordable, they focus on the essentials and do away with unnecessary tools. The kits contain the following tools:
- a screwdriver with 4 mm bits suitable for the console in question;
- a fiberglass-reinforced nylon spatula for leverage;
- curved tweezers for handling small components;
- picks for lifting, sliding or separating components;
- an anti-static brush and cleaning brushes for cleaning the console;
- an antistatic bracelet to protect against electrostatic discharges.
Another positive point: the kits work by console generation. Thus, the PlayStation kit allows you to take care of the PS3, PS4 and PS5, including the Pro and Slim versions. Perfect for collectors! Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck owners also have dedicated kits. Be careful, however, in the event of a problem with the screen of the portable console, you will absolutely need the iOpener, a set of tools necessary for this type of operation and available from €12.99.
For gamers who are allergic to dust, iFixit also offers a cleaning kit for €24.95, containing a brush, a microfiber cloth, cleaning fluid and a dust blower. Note that it is possible to buy tools “à la carte”. For example, a screwdriver bit costs €2.95, while it costs €4.95 to replace a pair of tweezers. This avoids having to buy an entire kit for a single missing tool. iFixit offers several detailed guides to help novice repairers with their DIY. But be careful, some repairs are still tricky and not within everyone’s reach!
