People who are sexually expressive are generally seen as safer, happier, and generally tend to have more satisfying relationships with the opposite sex. However, excessive sexual addiction harms both the person and the environment. This addiction, called hypersexuality, occurs when a person can no longer control their sexual urges.
WHAT CAUSES HYPERSEXUALITY?
- a genetic predisposition
- Trauma
- sexual abuse
- an environmental stressor
- Sex anxiety and excessive interest in pornography
- Hyperthyroidism – If the thyroid gland is overactive, this can cause sexual desires to get out of control.
- Temporal lobe disorder and epilepsy – Conditions in the temporal lobe of the brain have been associated with nymphomania.
- Ovarian cysts – Due to estrogenic growth, some ovarian cysts can cause hypersensitivity. This can cause an increase in estrogen boosting libido, which can rise to unhealthy levels.
SEX ADDICTION SYMPTOMS
IF REGULAR SEX IS NOT ENOUGH
You find the usual routine of making love very boring these days. There is a need to experiment, try new things and seek new stimuli. Many couples are fond of things like this to spice up their sex lives, but if the need is compelling and causes you to do ugly things, these are signs of sex addiction. For example, role-playing might be a good idea, but if you’re thinking of swinging then there’s a problem.
PORN ADDICTION
If you have a large stash of pornography that you often turn to for relaxation or just to indulge, that’s a sure sign of addiction.
IF YOU ARE CONTINUOUSLY THINKING ABOUT SEXUAL
Between the two sexes, men are said to think more about sex than women. But how often is it too much? There’s no definitive guide to this, but if you have sex on your mind when you need to focus on other things like work or spending time with family or friends, it could be the first sign of sex addiction.
IF YOU ARE CONTINUOUSLY LOOKING FOR SEXUAL MATERIAL
Sex has a strong representation in a variety of settings. Be it newspapers, websites, magazines, music, movies and television. Sex addicts often look for sexual content wherever they can find it. For example, they might pick up a women’s magazine just to read sex-related articles, or they might get more excited when intimate or lewd scenes appear in movies or music videos. If you can sit in a sex scene without being aroused or feel the need to seek sexual content, then you’re in good shape.
IF YOU CAN’T FOLLOW THE CODE OF SEXUAL CONDUCT
Sex addicts are often prone to cheating without just coercion. It is planned, proactive, and the person who tolerates it cares little about the results. They are ready to risk their relationships just to satisfy this urge. You may have a strong sex drive, but if that pushes you to seek multiple partners, then you are at serious risk of losing your partner, not to mention the many emotional traumas that will follow.
