Ghostcrawler and his team presented their new MMORPG with the project name Ghost in a live stream. In around an hour they explained the most important key points such as the general gameplay loop, the combat system, the classes and the direction of the lore. We at MeinMMO summarize.
What kind of game is this? The new MMORPG from Ghostcrawler, who previously worked on WoW and the LoL MMORPG, is intended to offer a special mix of theme park and sandbox and of multiplayer and single player:
The gameplay loop should basically revolve around walking between red and blue shards and always completing the task that suits you best. If enough friends are online, you can go into the classic MMO areas. If you are traveling alone, then it is better to kill solo bosses or do housing.
The game wants to respect your time as much as possible, Ghostcrawler emphasized in the live stream. Nevertheless, players who want to maximize everything should get their money’s worth:

Many classes, many races and skins that you can proudly present
What about the characters in the game? In Ghost you should be able to choose from a variety of classes. Some are based on traditional play styles such as warrior or rogue, others are intended to be “unusual”.
You will also have different races to choose from, although elves and dwarves from the Tolkien universe are not simply copied here. Ghost has its own approach and this should also be reflected in the playable races.
The classes are also tied to different factions. These fight each other a little, but it’s more about hidden side and story aspects. Basically, you should be able to play with every class and every race.
In general, the topic of togetherness is very important to the studio. This means you should be able to play with friends across servers without much effort.
What about the skins? The appearance of the characters played an important role, especially in the old MMORPGs. This should be the case again in Ghost. There will be skins that allow you to do “peacocking”. So you should stand proudly like a peacock in the big capital and let other players admire you.
However, you won’t get the rarest skins just like that. You need a lot of talent, time and also a bit of luck. “We think exclusivity is cool,” emphasized Ghostcrawler on this topic.
Story in chapters and a hybrid combat system
What was revealed about the story? The story in the game should be told in different chapters and developed later in the same way. The role of our hero should be more comparable to the story of Destiny.
You belong to an elite crew that is stronger than the average NPC. However, you are not the only chosen one, which is also nonsense in an MMO setting, the developers emphasized. After all, there are hundreds or thousands of chosen people who simply walk around next to you.

What else was revealed? Ghost relies on a hybrid combat system. The players are used to pressing the Tab key on the PC and selecting the next mob, which they don’t want to change.
However, the team wants to offer controller support and bring in a certain level of dynamism. One topic is soft lock, so that you only have to aim close but are guaranteed to hit an enemy.
All that was said about the art style was that they are still in a discovery phase, but don’t want to become too “cartooney”.
The first content should be able to be tested as early as 2023
What images have you seen so far? Not much. Mainly concept art and some sketches of ideas were shown. There was no gameplay to be seen in the form of a video yet.
However, the website will be adapted this year so that you can register for tests. It was said in the live stream that the first test groups would be rather small. “Not everyone will be able to test the game this year,” explained Kristina Swanenburg.
That alone sounds impressive for a studio that was only founded in spring 2023.
In general, however, the game should be developed heavily in collaboration with the fans. There should be surveys about content, players should be included in the development in small focus groups and there should be lots of playtests.
Who is behind the game? The head of the studio is Greg “Ghostcrawler” Street. He was lead designer at WoW from February 2008 to December 2013. He then moved to Riot Games, where he first worked on LoL and later on the upcoming LoL MMORPG as head.
