The Steam Summer Sale is currently enticing with numerous offers. Among the games there is a special pearl called Eville, with which MeinMMO author Jasmin Beverungen was able to have completely new experiences. If you don’t know what kind of title it is, Jasmin wrote you an overview of the game. Otherwise you can skip straight to the second part of the article.
How does Eville play? The multiplayer social deduction game Eville has been on the market since the end of last year. You can think of the title as similar to the “Werewolves” game: A group of innocent villagers is infiltrated by conspirators and has to uncover over several rounds which of the group is the culprit.
There is a day and night rhythm. During the day, the villagers perform certain tasks, set traps or brew potions to protect themselves from the criminals. Each resident has their own house, to which they withdraw at night.
If you are a criminal yourself, you must kill one of the villagers every night. To do this, you run into the houses of the (mostly sleeping) villagers and, in the best case, kill them. The following day it is decided which player behaved the most suspiciously and will be burned accordingly.
At the beginning of each round you will be assigned a random role. If you are on the side of the villagers, you can help with the investigation with a special gift. For example, the seer can set up magic traps that act like a kind of surveillance camera.
Due to the different roles and potions, which, for example, ensure that you stay awake at night, no round plays like the other. But in addition to the varied gameplay, I was particularly impressed by the community.
What did I particularly like about Eville? Before you start a round, you can decide in which language you want to play the title. If you choose the English community, you have a larger selection of lobbies. But I made a conscious decision to play the game in German and I haven’t regretted it.
Due to the fact that the community in German was smaller, over several evenings you were randomly thrown together with people you had already played with. As a result, something like insiders in the group and small friendships have developed.
By the way, there is a similar game principle in Among Us:
The bond came about, among other things, because the game works with voice chat. It is also possible for shy people to only use the chat. But it was precisely through the voice chat that one felt “more connected” to the other people and could spark more jokes than in the chat.
Thanks to the friend function, I was able to add people at some point and deliberately set new dates for game rounds with them. The people were very reliable and so we became a playgroup. A particularly drastic experience showed me how much I can rely on the troops.
Eville brought our squad together
In one round, an English-speaking person suddenly got lost in our group. We had received the stranger to us in a friendly manner and switched to English especially for him so that he could follow what was happening.
However, after a short time it turned out that the person did not have good intentions: I had been preparing for the upcoming night in my house. There I brewed a potion that allowed me to stay up at night. This allowed me to escape potential killers and protect myself for another night.
But the new player also joined my house. After initial “Hi” and “How are you” it quickly became clear what the stranger was aiming for: He suddenly started calling me “Baby” and saying lewd things.
When I then ran out of the house and confided in others in the group, we decided to dial out, report and block the English speaker immediately. Regardless of what role the player actually has.
In his anger, the player threw things at us that have to do with our German origins, which I better not repeat here. Never before have I felt so vulnerable and protected in a video game as I did in Eville. I never would have thought that before installing the game.
The group could have simply ignored the incident or not taken my concerns seriously. So what I remember most about Eville is the great community (apart from one exception).
The sad thing about the story: Unfortunately, our squad has now disbanded and we enjoy ourselves in other games. I still often think about the incident and what might have become of the group. Because I’ve rarely seen such friendly people in a game.
Eville is currently available at a price of EUR 5.99 instead of EUR 14.99. about the game can be found on MeinMMO: Among Us fans celebrate new multiplayer game on Steam – hunt down ax murderers in a quaint village
