If you play Destiny 2 with hardware that is too good, you will die almost twice as fast

Leksand extended the winning streak beat AIK

Anyone who plays the loot shooter Destiny 2 with good hardware and a lot of FPS should be prepared to die faster, because there is a nasty FPS bug in Season 19. It ensures that players with good hardware in particular are killed by laser Defense towers can die much faster in the Exo-Mission “Operation: Seraph’s Shield”. MeinMMO did the test.

What FPS bug plagues Destiny 2? As early as 2021, Destiny 2 punished players who had powerful PCs or consoles with an extra portion of damage. At that time it specifically concerned the advance guard strike “Proving Grounds”. There, the Cabal’s projectiles did more damage at higher frame rates because they were also registered more often.

Well-known Destiny 2 streamer Aztecross showed in one of his videos at the time that a difference of just 24 frames has a significant impact on the damage a Guardian can take in Destiny 2.

  • At 144 frames per second, he could not withstand an enemy shot.
  • However, when he lowered his frame rate to 120, that was no longer an issue.
  • In Season 19, the guardians are not only threatened by aliens, but also by FPS-sensitive lasers.

Now this bug is back or maybe it was never really gone. If you play the “Operation: Seraph’s Shield” mission with 100 FPS and more in Season 19, you may be able to react faster. But you also die faster from the laser turrets and have much less time to take cover.

What is meant by the term “FPS”?:
FPS stands for “frames per seconds”. The FPS value indicates how many frames per second appear on a screen and therefore how smoothly the picture runs. The term “frame rate” is also often used. So it depends on your hardware whether you can play a game smoothly or not. In gaming it is often crucial to achieve a high FPS number.

With a low frame rate you can escape the deadly and obviously FPS-sensitive lasers of Season 19 much better and longer. So you can easily reach the next safe cover with 30 FPS.

What sounds like a bad joke isn’t: In Destiny 2, the days when game physics and mechanics are tied to framerate obviously seem far from over. If you play with low FPS or artificially lower your frame rate in the Destiny 2 settings menu, you will actually survive longer.

A video of the player SnipingG1337 shared by Destiny Bulletin on Twitter also shows exactly what this looks like. It highlights how significant technical issues continue to plague the five-year-old game.

At 144 FPS, the laser turret will get you much quicker.

MeinMMO tried it out for you and was able to confirm the results. We set different frame rates for this and then let the Seraph lasers fry us several times to determine the average kill times of the lasers with different frame rates in Destiny 2.

  • With 30 FPS you die in Season 19 after a relaxed 16.6 seconds.
  • 60 FPS send you to the eternal hunting grounds after 12.7 seconds.
  • And at 120 FPS, it grills your keeper after just under 9.4 seconds.
  • These tests clarify what some players in Destiny 2 have known for a long time and are actively using for themselves. Your personal framerate affects how good you can be in PvE, regardless of your skill level.

Doesn’t work in PvP: However, if you already have one foot in the next PvP match in your mind, then stop. The differences seem to be generally limited to PvE activities like the laser turrets in the seasonal activities, some twilight strikes and raids. So you won’t get any benefit from it in PvP.

Where does this problem come from? Even then, it was suspected that Bungie’s Tiger engine could be to blame for this problem. After all, it was developed for a game that was limited to 30 FPS on last generation consoles. With the PC port in the Forsaken DLC in 2018 and the new consoles, the FPS bug then gradually became an issue that is probably very deeply embedded in the foundations of Destiny 2.

Will Bungie fix the bug? Nothing official is known about this at the moment. But it should not go unmentioned that Bungie may have already taken the time to future-proof its engine and thus soon eliminate this source of errors as well. According to this, some frame rate corrections from Bungie could already be integrated into the game with the new DLC “Lightfall” in February 2023 or with the subsequent DLC “The Final Form”.

What do you say? Does it bother you that you have to take more damage with high frame rates? Or are you already using the trick by actively lowering your frames, reacting more slowly, but being able to endure more? Let us know what frame rate you’re currently playing Destiny 2 at in the comments.
