The German historical series Barbarians revolves around the well-known Varus Battle between the Germanic peoples and the Roman army. If you’re already a fan of Vikings, the Netflix production could be just the thing for you.

Barbarians is a German Netflix production, which is set to music in the original language in German and Latin. The first season was released in 2020. Season 2 followed in October 2022.

After the release, there were divided opinions about the series, but overall Barbbaren does quite well among viewers if you look at user reviews (as of November 10, 2023):

  • On IMDb, Barbarians has an average of 7.2 stars with 29,353 reviews.
  • On Rotten Tomatoes the average Tomatometer is 86%.

    The focus is on the Varus battle between Germans and Romans

    What is Barbarians about? The series takes place in the year 9 AD and revolves around the bloody battle of the Roman army against Germanic tribes, who are also enemies of each other.

    The focus is on three childhood friends, whose fates and experiences are told in the eye of the impending great battle:

  • Arminius, son of the Cheruscan prince Segimer, who had lived with the Romans since his childhood
  • Folkwin Wolfspear, a Cheruscan warrior
  • Thusnelda, daughter of the Cheruscan prince Segestes

    • The series takes up a historical event with the Battle of Varus, also known as the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest or Battle of Hermann, similar to what the Vikings series did with the semi-historical/mythical figure Ragnar Lothbrok.

    The focus is on the conflicts between powerful opponents, which escalate into epic battles and bloody fight scenes, just as happened in the Viking series.
