Missing House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones? You can binge-watch this historical series full of political intrigue, plots, violence and debauchery.
House of the Dragon finished airing its second season on Monday, August 5, 2024. While waiting for the release of season 3, already announced by HBO, or the many other spin-off series Game Of Thronesyou’re probably hungry. If you’re missing the political intrigue, violent fights or debauchery that were the hallmarks of the two series adapted from George RR Martin, don’t panic, there are other TV series that can make you happy.
One of them came out in the mid-2000s and was widely acclaimed by the public (it has a rating of 4/5 on Allociné). Also created by HBO, this historical series does not feature dragons but it does feature many plots, bloody punishments, betrayals, court intrigues and intrigues of the people, with a chiseled writing and a particularly neat artistic direction.
Broadcast from 2005 to 2007, Rome dives, as its name suggests, into the heart of the Roman Republic as it gradually collapses to make way for the Empire (from the end of the Gallic Wars to the advent of Augustus precisely). In the middle, the audience follows the fate of two Roman soldiers and their families who find themselves impacted by court intrigues. The series brings together well-known faces from the small screen, such as Kevin McKidd (Grey’s Anatomy), the late Ray Stevenson (Ahsoka), Ciaran Hinds (There will be blood), Polly Walker (The Bridgerton Chronicle), Indira Varma (Game Of Thrones) or Tobias Menzies (Outlander, The Crown).
A true critical and popular success, Rome was the highest budget series in history at the time of its production (which is what prevented it from continuing beyond two seasons), and won 7 Emmy Awards. The 22 episodes that make up the two seasons of Rome are available in their entirety on Prime Video. You just need a subscription to Amazon’s streaming platform, at no extra cost, to access them.
