The thyroid gland is located in the anterior part of the windpipe. The thyroid gland, which has a very important place in the functions of our body with the hormones it secretes, may secrete less and excessive hormones depending on some reasons. The fact that the thyroid gland does not meet its hormones at the normal level causes various diseases and disorders in the body. exp. Dr. Betül Kundakçı gave information about ‘Thyroid Diseases’.
IF YOU HAVE THESE SYMPTOMS, TEST
Expressing that thyroid dysfunctions are very common in the society, Kundakçı said, “The symptoms of thyroid diseases vary according to the type of disease, but also differ according to more or less functioning of the thyroid. Thyroid dysfunction is very common in the community. In addition, thyroid dysfunctions come to mind in health problems such as mood changes, hair loss, fatigue, and obesity, and tests are requested in this direction. In order to make a decision about a patient’s thyroid status, it is necessary to evaluate his complaints, physical examination findings and thyroid function tests together.
WEIGHT LOSS IS A DEFINITIVE FACTOR
Stating that under secretion of thyroid hormones, that is, hypothyroidism, all metabolism from nails to hair strands slows down, complaints such as hair loss, forgetfulness, tendency to sleep, weight gain, weakness, thickening of the voice, and dryness of the skin occur. Dr. Betül Kundakçı said, “In case of excess of this hormone, that is, hyperthyroidism, excessive sweating, hair loss and rapid weight loss are seen. This hormone provides the development of brain and intelligence in the fetus and newborn baby in the womb. It directs the growth and development of the child. Regulates sugar, fat and protein metabolism in adults. Thyroid gland diseases are diagnosed and treatment is started by taking thyroid function tests, thyroid antibodies, thyroid ultrasound and scintigraphy when necessary. Starting the right treatment for the patient and following it at the right intervals are important in the success of the treatment.
IODINE DEFICIENCY IS A SIGNIFICANT HEALTH PROBLEM
Drawing attention to the iodine deficiency, Dr. Dr. Betül Kundakçı said, “Iodine deficiency diseases that develop as a result of insufficient intake of iodine with food are an important public health problem all over the world. For the elimination of iodine deficiency, UNICEF, ICCIDD and WHO recommend a national level table salt iodization program to countries. In 1998, the production of iodized table salt became compulsory in Turkey. Although iodine deficiency has decreased in the world and in Turkey, it is still an important public health problem.
