If you experience bloating after eating, be careful! It seems simple, but it may be a sign of disease.

General Surgeon Op. Dr. Erdem Şentatar: “Post-meal swelling in the abdomen may occur due to the accumulation of gas or liquid in the digestive system, which includes the esophagus, stomach and intestines. This swelling in the abdomen can reduce the quality of life, make it difficult for the person to move comfortably and negatively affect his social life. The problem of bloating is “Knowing the underlying causes and taking precautions is important in order to live a more comfortable life,” he said.

SWALLOWED AIR CAUSES GAS ACCUMULATION

Op. Dr. Erdem Şentatar explained some of the most common causes of post-meal bloating as follows:

“When we eat quickly, we usually swallow air along with the meal. This air enters the digestive tract and can cause gas accumulation, resulting in bloating. Consuming food slowly and thoroughly by chewing it can be effective in reducing this situation.

“FOOD SELECTION IS AN IMPORTANT FACTOR”

Additionally, food choice is also an important factor; Carbohydrate-rich, fibrous or gas-forming foods (e.g. legumes, broccoli, onions) can increase gas formation during digestion and cause bloating. In people with intolerance to dairy products, foods containing lactose may cause abdominal bloating.

DIGESTIVE SYSTEM DISORDERS

Digestive system disorders can also cause bloating. Conditions such as reflux, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or food intolerances can disrupt the normal functioning of the intestines, causing gas accumulation, bloating and indigestion. IBS, in particular, causes irregular bowel movements, which can lead to post-meal abdominal bloating and pain. Stress and anxiety can also affect the digestive system, causing digestion to slow down or work irregularly. This causes food to remain in the intestine for longer and causes gas accumulation. Reducing stress levels during meals can relieve bloating.

INSUFFICIENT WATER CONSUMPTION

Finally, insufficient water consumption can also cause post-meal bloating. “Not drinking enough water can cause bloating, which can slow down digestion and reduce bowel movements.”

ADDITIONAL COMPLAINTS AND DURATION OF BLOATING ARE ALSO IMPORTANT

Şentatar said, “It is done by taking into consideration the patient’s general health condition, additional complaints and the duration of the bloating complaint. “Blood tests, stool examinations, imaging tests (ultrasound, tomography, endoscopies), allergy and intolerance tests and functional tests (gastric emptying tests) must be performed according to the patient’s condition,” he explained the diagnostic process.

“MOST OF THE TIME IT CAN BE PREVENTED”

Stating that this problem can be alleviated by simple measures such as eating slowly, avoiding gas-causing foods, staying away from stress and consuming enough water, General Surgery Doctor Erdem Şentatar said that individuals who experience constant and severe abdominal bloating should definitely consult a specialist to find out whether there is a serious underlying health problem. He suggested she apply. Şentatar said, “You can get rid of this discomfort by eating right, consuming enough water, and taking steps towards your digestive health under the guidance of an expert when necessary. He concluded his speech by saying, “Remember that a healthy digestive system directly affects your quality of life.”
