On September 16, 2025, the popular tabletop role-playing game Dungeons & Dragons will receive a new entry-level set. It has some content that makes it particularly interesting – especially for newcomers who have not yet been able to do much with D&D. But the set also offers some interesting tricks for experienced players and game leaders.
What is a starter set for D&D? Starter sets or entry-level sets should bring newcomers closer to the basic features of the pen and paper role-playing game without overwhelming them directly or stopping it too long. They should give a quick introduction to the worlds around dungeons & dragons, the rules and the mechanics without going too depth.
It usually contains one or more short adventures, prefabricated character sheets and booklets with instructions for prospective game ladder and players, as well as smaller gimmicks such as cube sets, displays, environmental cards or the like.
In a sneak Peek, Wizard of the Coast presented the new entry -level set with the nickname “Heroes of the Borderlands”. You can read what it does differently than previous starter sets and why this is exciting.

A kit for everyone?
What is different in the new starter set? It contains a revision of adventure B2: The Keep on the Borderlands, which was published in 1979 as a classic D&D module (via DMSguild). There will be 3 booklets for the box, each of which can be used and combined independently: The Caves of Chaos, The Keep on the Borderlands and The Wilderness. Each booklet contains short tutorials that are intended to help prospective and returning players better.
In addition to the booklets, various cards for spells, NPCs and monsters are contained, so that players and game ladder have to leaf less in different staples while playing. There will also be a reference booklet in which you can quickly look up important things. In addition, there should be some surrounding cards and tokens with which you can better visualize your adventure.
In keeping with the modularity of the adventure, there will also be a kind of “kit” for the first time, with which you can assemble your starter character yourself. Before that, there were only completely pre -made character arches, from which the players of the entry -level box could choose, which caused newcomers to play itself, but not to create closer.
So the new content of the set could look – design and content are not yet final
The idea of the new modular system is that players can design their own character from different background, species and class components without having to work too deeply into the matter. So you should be able to get a fundamental feeling for creating a character in D&D.
In the video, Lead Game designer of the new set, Justice Ramin Arman, praises the content of the content. It remains to be seen how exactly Wizards of the Coast means in this context if the course of the game depends on its players and the improvised decisions anyway.
Most likely, reference is made to the various combination options by the modularity of the content, so that the same constellation of game managers and players can use the box several times without mandatory in similar situations.
However, the fact that the content of the content has been concentrated is far more exciting that the content is as accessible as possible, so that according to Lead Game Designer, many different types of players and age groups can be played more easily. So you should also be able to use the set well for families at a cozy game night.
Likewise, one focus was on the fact that even during the session, those involved can change in their role, so that everyone interested could enjoy the position of the game manager and try out and also vice versa.
This and the strong modularity also make the box interesting for experienced players who simply want to play a quick round with inexperienced people or want to experiment.
