If the recent OneUI update brought AI functions to old Galaxy smartphones, it also caused collateral damage on certain models, with the new version of the system suffering from several annoying bugs.
It’s now official! After several weeks of waiting, Samsung has finally rolled out One UI 6.1, a significant update intended to integrate the artificial intelligence features of the Galaxy S24 on the previous version of the smartphone, the Galaxy S23. Since March 28, users can benefit from several new options powered by AI and which are particularly useful. This is particularly the case for the translation of telephone calls, automatic transcription, the generation of texts, images, but also controlled slow motion in videos, or even the function allowing a long press on an element displayed on the screen to launch an instant search on Google. Unfortunately, like many updates, this overhaul also brought its share of more or less annoying bugs.
One UI 6.1: bugs on old Samsung Galaxy
On social networks, many users have complained about a bug concerning the fingerprint scanner. Some of them actually noticed that the fingerprint animation, which is supposed to appear when turning on the phone or double-tapping the screen, had disappeared. “There is no error, the fingerprint animation reappears once I touch the screen and I have to touch it again to unlock the phone; it seems like my contact restarts the fingerprint sensor or the sensor ignores the presence of my finger”regrets a user on Reddit.
The bug is not systematic and has not affected all phones, but it still poses serious problems for users who need to unlock their phones many times during the day. Fortunately, there is a fallback solution until Samsung deploys a fix: you must go to Settings > Security and privacy > Biometrics to deactivate the Show transition effect when unlocking option.
Since the rollout of One UI 6.1, some Galaxy S23s have also been affected by charging issues. On the Samsung forum, several users regretted that the charging speed of their phone had dropped significantly – up to 40% slower for some. Here again, the bug has not become widespread, but it can prove particularly restrictive. According to our colleagues at SamMobile, who did not encounter this type of problem while testing the new update, this could simply come from the state of the smartphone’s battery. Phones may be faster to charge depending on the state of the battery, but also depending on when they were put on charge. Indeed, some smartphones charge quickly when the battery is low before slowing down when they get closer to 100%.
Unfortunately, these bugs did not come alone with the rollout of One UI 6.1. Since this update, several phones have displayed an overheating state. This could in particular be due to the fact that new functions powered by AI require more energy from the processor. A theory that does not seem to be unanimous, since some users have noticed that their smartphone could have this problem when it was at rest.
