If anyone thought superhero movies had reached their end with Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter was overestimating

Kraven the Hunter is entirely dedicated to the villain from the Spider-Man universe. The film opened in cinemas 2 days ago and almost immediately achieved a new negative record.

How did things go for Kraven the Hunter? To sum it up succinctly: Not good at all. On its first day, the film grossed 4.7 million US dollars, the equivalent of around 4.5 million euros in the box office. Given the budget of around 114 million euros, this is a flop that probably won’t be able to be compensated for in the next few weeks. This ties in with the Morbius film, which is also about a supervillain.

For comparison:

  • Madame Web was already considered a big flop for the Marvel universe. The film has a rating of 4.0 out of 10 on IMDb. Even actress Dakota Johnson complained about the film. But even that film grossed about 14.6 million on its first day (via Box Office Mojo).
  • There are only 3 Marvel films that are worth less than Kraven the Hunter. These include Howard the Duck and Punisher: War Zone (both 1.52 million euros each) and Elektra (4.2 million euros).
  • If inflation were taken into account, only Punisher: War Zone would be below Kraven the Hunter. This means that the new Marvel film narrowly misses the worst theatrical release for a film from the superhero universe. Thanks to the first film reviews, it is also clear why the film is so poorly received by audiences.

Critics reveal the possible reasons for the failure

What are the reasons for this? Film critic BeHaind explains what he didn’t like about Kraven the Hunter in his video on YouTube. A big problem for him was the many reshoots. You would notice in the film when a scene was introduced later.

For example, in these scenes, the characters would say something, but their mouths wouldn’t move. It would also not be explained what makes Kraven so special and what the potion actually is that gives him his powers. For him, the film is a “collection of scenes thrown together” that he cannot recommend. The “terrible CGI” also does the rest.

Our colleagues from film starts see it similarly. They rate the film only 2.0 out of 5 possible stars. They describe the film as “damn boring” because there is too much dialogue and not enough action. The quality of the CGI animals would decline and the interaction between the well-known actors would be disappointing.

Another film that flopped despite having a top star in the cast is 65. This is a sci-fi film with dinosaurs. You can read here what led to the failure of this film: A sci-fi film with dinosaurs became a flop that everyone has forgotten – failed at the box office despite being a top star
