Anyone who gets their hands on a Marvel role as an actor has made it and must be happy about it. At least that’s the view of many franchise fans. Idris Elba, who has played Chris Hemsworth’s companion Heimdall since Thor in 2011, has had a different experience. His return to the filming of He didn’t like Thor 2: The Dark Kingdom. But he had to.
Marvel Star Idris Elba on Thor 2 Return: “It’s Torture”
Elba told the Telegraph in 2014 about his filming experience:
I’m falling out of a spaceship in one scene, so they hung me up by ropes in a green screen studio. And between takes I’m stuck there with my hair glued on under my stupid helmet […] with the sword and the contact lenses. It ripped my heart out. […] I was like, ‘This is torture, I don’t want it.’ But my agent replied it was part of the deal.
The background, however, is not the unusual Marvel shooting conditions alone. Elba had shortly before all put his passion into his heart project Mandela: The long road to freedom, for which he lived in South Africa for months. On the day of his return, he had to go straight to the post-production Thor 2: The Dark Kingdom filming that was part of his MCU commitments. The contrast between biopic and fantasy performance must have torn him apart.
Maybe he got used to the experience again, because after Thor 2 the actor returned to the MCU screen a total of five more times. Still, he seems to have become wary of big franchises. He doesn’t feel like playing the new James Bond for a sad reason.
