Icon Therese Alshammar’s serious concern after Sarah Sjöström’s new WC gold success: “The biggest problem”

Sarah Sjöström made another big success in the swimming WC.
But now the icon Therese Alshammar reveals the great concern.
– It’s not fun for anyone. That is the biggest problem right now, says Alshammar to Expressen.

The Swimming WC 2024 in Doha was a great Swedish success. WC bronze for Louise Hansson and WC silver in the team race, but it was of course the swimming queen Sarah Sjostrom which accounted for the greatest success.

Sjöström’s WC gold

The 30-year-old won double WC gold in the 50 meter butterfly and 50 meter freestyle. Now she has a total of 20 WC gold medals during her incredible career in the water.

Sjöström is in great shape ahead of the summer Olympics in Paris and is now being praised by the icon Therese Alshammarwho will be a swimming expert at Discovery during the 2024 Olympics.
– She is unique. She has received a gift and is just finding her arena to show it off. She has an almost superhuman capacity and the way she dominated for several years is so awesome, says Alshammar in an interview with Expressen.
– Her times at the WC cement her status as the best in the world and when it comes to the Olympics, you can expect her to win.

Alshammar worried

But it will be significantly tougher for both Sjöström and the other Swedes in the Olympics than it was in the WC, strangely enough. Because of what is happening in the swimming world right now.
– It’s a long way from all the countries that sent their absolute best swimmers and teams. Partly because it’s February, it’s only six months since the last WC and it’s an Olympic year. There were several countries that had their selections now, says Alshammar to the evening newspaper and clarifies:
– So I think the Swedish swimmers should go to Paris cool and confident, but from the outside the expectations should be a little different when significantly more national teams and big swimmers are added.

In recent years, there have been swimming WCs in all kinds of forms, and Alshammar has gotten really tired. She is now airing her serious concerns about the future of the sport.
– Before, the WC was decided much less often, but now there are three in three years… It’s not fun for anyone. That’s swimming’s biggest problem right now, because you confuse everyone. Whether to go to a WC or not, that should be a non-issue. Everyone should join, I mean. I hope that things will improve now after the Olympics, says the Swedish swimming legend in the interview.
